How to pass the Florida knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Florida manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Florida law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Florida written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 15 years
Motorcycle 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 16 years
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. Class E Knowledge Exam. FLHSMV states the exam has 50 multiple-choice items and that 40 correct answers, or 80 percent, are needed to pass. The minimum age shown is for a learner's license; a Class E driver license requires age 16.

Motorcycle. Florida does not run a separate motorcycle knowledge exam. The endorsement is added after the Basic RiderCourse, and a Motorcycle Only license requires the same Class E Knowledge Exam plus the Basic RiderCourse.

CDL. CDL general knowledge test. Applicants must be at least 18, and applicants under 21 are restricted to intrastate operation. FLHSMV does not publish the item count on its CDL pages, so the values shown follow the federal 80 percent standard and are listed as unconfirmed.
